How abortion pill mifepristone is used and where you can legally access it

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that could severely limit access to mifepristone, a prescription medication most commonly used as part of a two-drug regimen for abortions.

The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, an antiabortion group, filed a case in 2022 challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s decades-long approval of mifepristone in a Texas federal district court. Since then, legal battles have ensued to either protect or block access to the medication. The impending Supreme Court hearing will consider whether to reverse the lower court’s ruling, which would make mifepristone more difficult to access.
