Nationals win first game but split doubleheader with White Sox
CHICAGO — Washington Nationals Manager Dave Martinez knew, to find success in Tuesday’s doubleheader, he would need just about every player to contribute. It would take leadoff hitter CJ Abrams. It would take the full bullpen, including right-hander Jackson Rutledge, who was called up as the roster’s 27th player.
But he probably didn’t expect it also would take reserve infielder Nasim Nuñez, whose heads-up base running helped the Nationals beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-3, in the first game at sparsely populated Guaranteed Rate Field. The collective effort wasn’t enough to score a sweep; Washington was shut out, 4-0, in the second game behind seven scoreless innings from 2014 Nationals first-round draft pick Erick Fedde and two homers by Andrew Vaughn. Still, Nuñez’s efforts were enough to set up a rubber match Wednesday afternoon.
